How this was built

I drafted this timeline with AI assistance, then checked every date and claim against a named source. Corrections are welcome and I will make them.

Where a widely repeated story could not be sourced, I did not delete it. I labeled it Contested and left it in, because the folklore about a panic is part of the record of that panic. Three of the most beloved anecdotes about technological resistance appear here as folklore rather than fact.

The shaded panic windows are editorial judgments, not measurements. They mark roughly when organized resistance or public alarm began, and roughly when the technology stopped being controversial. Reasonable people would draw them differently. Do not read precision into the edges.

The blue layer exists because a timeline of only successful disruptions proves whatever you already believed. Three forecasts here were made confidently by serious people and did not happen. They are the control group.
